"I think being a woman is like being Irish." — Iris Murdoch
Waitress
Last night we watched Waitress, and it's now officially one of my favorite films.
It took me a little while to recognize Nathan Fillion (who I loved in Firefly). He and Keri Russell are wonderfully funny as they stumble their way into an affair. And Andy Griffith is superb. Everybody in this film is at the top of their game, and the script is infallible. Even Cheryl Hines, who've I've always found unlikeable, changed my mind in this movie.
At one point I said to Nelson, "What a horrible place to be a woman," to which he replied, "Third-world countries are like that."
I'm not sure what he meant exactly, since the film is set in the American South, but Nelson is not always amenable to questions...
Anyway, I recommend it highly. It's funny, and sensitive, and both stylized and very real, and has some (to me) amazing ways of telling the story. The whole business of the pies, their names, and their ingredients is a creative inspiration.
