"I think being a woman is like being Irish." — Iris Murdoch
Oh, yeah, about that "legacy"
I was thinking: in the future, Dubya isn't going to get the "credit" that he wants for the Iraq war. It will be looked as his father's war (if anyone's). Why? Because we never left Iraq. For the whole interval between the first and second Gulf Wars, American and England were bombing Iraq on a regular basis. The two countries set up a "no fly zone" (which btw had no legal basis and wasn't recognized by the UN).
I remember occasional reports in the newspapers every about Iraqi's challenging the flights, sending interceptors, firing on our planes and so on.
Nobody (other than historians and history buffs) is going to be splitting hairs about timetables. They're going to want to know roughly when did it start? and when did it end? and the answer to neither of those questions is going to fall into the years that Dubya was lost in the White House.
When did it start? In Daddy's time. When did it end? I don't know... is it going to end?
America is good at starting conflicts, but not so good at ending them. We still have troops in Europe (remnant of WW2), Korea, Afghanistan, and I'm sure many other places that I'm not informed enough to know about.
So, Bush's legacy is pretty much going to be limited to having taken the most vacation time of any president, and having the lowest approval rating. Oh, and being the son of a president.
Please note that I'm not saying that the boy hasn't done a world of harm. It's going to take a long time to undo the mess he's left. I'm just predicting what his "blurb" will be.
