"I think being a woman is like being Irish." — Iris Murdoch
Kid's TV
I remember a couple years back, I worked with a guy who had a few kids, and he was always talking about kids' movies and kids' shows, and one day I said, "You like this stuff yourself! You're just using your kids as an excuse to watch them." He looked at me sheepishly and didn't answer.
Of course, now I find myself in the same position. Emma sees a lot of TV, and I keep her company, so I've gone from Teletubbies to Lizzie McGuire with her. Sometimes when I'm home alone, I'll watch Darcy's Wild Life or Strange Days At Blake Holsey High. I think Kappa Mikey is the funniest show on television, and I wish Emma liked Zoey 101 and Life With Derek because otherwise there's no way I can watch them.
I never really wanted to go back in time, but all these shows actually make me wish I could turn into a kid and go back to junior high. Never felt that way before.
My favorite show that she watches is My Life As A Teenage Robot, where a robot named XJ9 (or "Jenny") goes to high school or middle school and tries to fit in. It's very clever the way she feels all the anxieties of a teenager, and the reason is that she's a robot. So it gives the comic distance. Plus, Jenny is so cute. I can't help but see myself in her, even if I never had "the strength of a million and seventy men."
I almost forgot! The reason I started writing is that on one of her cartoons just now, the bad guy sighed, "Never send a robot to do a guy-in-a-robot-suit's job." I just wanted to share that with you.
